The unity ceremonies have been around in one way or another for thousands of years. It’s a way for couples to show the joining of two lives and family into a single bond of love. There are various types of unity ceremonies. One example is the Sand Ceremony, but the meaning behind them is the same.
The couple ceremoniously pours various colors of sand from separate containers into one larger container, the unity vase, symbolizing them coming together as one. The flowing sand and blending of the colors in the Unity Sand Ceremony symbolize the bringing together of two lives into one. The two Sands symbolize everything that the bride and groom have been or will become in the future.
The separate sands once poured into the unity vase can never be put back into their separate vases. They are forever entwined just as the lives and loves of the bride and groom.
The sand ceremony can be personalized many different ways to best suit the couple's taste and desires. After the wedding ceremony, the couple has a beautiful keepsake to remind them of their wedding day.
How the Unity Sand Ceremony Works
The officiant, bride, and groom each take turns pouring the different color sands into the unity vase each following the spoken script which explains the process and creating a layered effect.
The Unity Sand Ceremony can be transformed to also include family and friends. Different colors of sand are given out so they can add their sand to the couple’s sand, creating a colorful and one-of-a-kind symbol of unity, strength, and love. Children can choose their own sand colors in order to put their unique mark on the ceremony.
